Travelling around the world costs money, no matter if you are doing it on the cheap, or living it up in five star luxury. Visiting any country without travel insurance is a huge mistake. However around ten million travellers do it every year. The main excuse given is cost.
We travel to many different locations and our view is …. it doesn’t matter if you are spending £500 on your travels or £10,000, there are hundreds of travel policies to choose from and you should be able to find one that can suit any budget.
However, we recommend doing a bit of homework and not choosing a travel policy just because its cheap.
Here are our five favourite travel insurance policy picks to help get you started.
1. Asda Travel Insurance
Asda Travel Insurance have three levels of cover Value, Premier and Superior. If you need a comprehensive policy and cost isn’t the main issue, then the Superior Policy is one of the best on the market. Underwritten by MAPFRE Assistance and managed by Insure and Go, who are themselves one of the top travel insurance providers.
The Superior policy benefits from Unlimited Medical Expenses cover, cancellation up to £5,000, Missed Departure up to £1,000, Baggage up to £2000, Airline Failure and End Supplier Insolvency as standard. The standard excess is only £50 and the Annual Policy includes winter sports cover free of charge (for up to 24 days per year).
Catastrophe and cover for your gadgets are available as optional extras. You are also able to get quotes for pre-existing medical conditions online, without the need to phone up.
If you are a family, get a quote, as children travel free of charge.
2. Holidaysafe Travel Insurance
Holidaysafe is the trading name of Infinity Insurance Solutions, another top travel insurance provider. Holidaysafe offer four levels of cover. We like the highly rated Premier Platinum Policy. Underwritten by Travel Insurance Facilities on behalf of Union Reisevershicherung AG (URV).
Holidaysafe have no age limit on single trip policies. They are top rated because the cancellation limit is up to £7500, baggage up to £3,000 with high single article limits, financial failure and natural disaster as standard and no excess. Policies cost a little more, but well worth it for the additional protection it provides.
If winter sports is your thing, then take a close look at the annual policy. There is no limit to the number of days you can ski in the year (provided each trip is no longer than 31 days)
3. Coverwise Travel Insurance
Coverwise is another well respected company that allows you to choose from five different products. From Standard and Bronze cover at the lower end, to Silver and Gold, mid range policies and finally the Platinum Policy at the higher end.
Cover is underwritten by Inter Partner Assistance a wholly owned subsidiary of the Axa Insurance Group. So top marks for the underwriter. As mentioned above there are five policies to choose from. If you are looking to cover maybe a long weekend abroad and aren’t too concerned about catastrophe or end supplier failure cover, then bronze, silver or gold may be for you. If you are planning a longer more expensive trip go for the Platinum Policy. For more information on the company click here.
4. Alpha Travel Insurance
At first glance Alpha Travel insurance look like they have many different policies to choose from. On closer inspection you will see that it is in fact one policy with the option to choose the level of excess. This can be set anywhere from zero to £250. What we like about this policy is that you can see the difference in premium changing the excess makes and find a level that you are comfortable with.
The policy itself is a mid range one, covering up to £1500 cancellation, although natural disaster and end supplier failure, are covered as standard. Children go free and it’s possible to take out a policy for up to 24 months. We like the cost, with premiums starting as low as 22 pence per day, you can’t really argue that cost is an issue.

5. All Clear Travel Insurance
All Clear’s motto is “Any Age, Any Condition Any Destination” They are slightly different to other companies, due to the fact that as well as their own policies, you can also choose from nine other travel insurance providers.
Their main emphasis is on those travelling with medical conditions. Their website is particularly geared up to this end of the market. You only have to enter your medical details once and you will receive quotes from a range of different companies.
All Clear have three policies to choose from, Traveller, Gold and Gold Plus. These are excellent mid range policies with up to £15 Million medical expenses cover, between £2,000 and £5,000 cancellation cover. The Gold and Gold Plus policies including Financial Failure as standard. The only downside is the excesses are a bit on the high side (£250 Gold and £75 Gold Plus).
